Special edition: Me and some things I make and do
Self-promotional? Sure, a bit. But who better to promote me than me?
Hello everyone! I wanted to take a special edition here to tell you about things that I have made or that I do in case you want to support that.
I can come to where you are and speak to you and others.
One of my favorite things that I ever get to do is travel to give talks to groups. I have several mental health topics I regularly talk about including stigma, depression, the collective trauma of covid we’ve all been through, and why I’m more hopeful than ever about the way our society views and treats mental illness. My speeches are candid, funnier than you might expect, informal, and have received rave reviews everywhere I’ve gone. Mental health can be an intimidating topic but it doesn’t have to be and it is important to talk about.
I’ve spoken to corporations, community groups, colleges, churches, and plenty more. If you are in need of a speaker, please contact my brilliant and helpful representatives at Collective Speakers.
The Hilarious World of Depression
Yes, that’s the title of a podcast I used to host but it’s also the title of a book I wrote that came out just a few years ago. It’s available in hardcover, paperback, and audio and you can buy it now. Makes a lovely holiday gift.
"[A] path to deeper understanding and openness, by way of laughter in the dark" —The New York Times Book Review
"Filled with heart, humor and hope." —People
"A funny, honest book." —Neil Gaiman
"Candid and funny and intimate." —Susan Orlean
For years John Moe, critically-acclaimed public radio personality and host of the Depresh Mode with John Moe podcast, struggled with depression; it plagued his family and claimed the life of his brother in 2007. As Moe came to terms with his own illness, he began to see similar patterns of behavior and coping mechanisms surfacing in conversations with others, including high-profile comedians who’d struggled with the disease. Moe saw that there was tremendous comfort and community in open dialogue about these shared experiences and that humor had a unique power. Thus was born the podcast The Hilarious World of Depression and then Depresh Mode with John Moe.
Inspired by the immediate success of the podcast, Moe has written a remarkable investigation of the disease, part memoir of his own journey, part treasure trove of laugh-out-loud stories and insights drawn from years of interviews with some of the most brilliant minds facing similar challenges. Throughout the course of this powerful narrative, depression’s universal themes come to light, among them, struggles with identity, lack of understanding of the symptoms, the challenges of work-life, self-medicating, the fallout of the disease in the lives of our loved ones, the tragedy of suicide, and the hereditary aspects of the disease.
